Preparing for your photoshoot
Choosing Clothing for Your Session
We encourage you to bring numerous changes of clothing. The only rule that we have is that you love the outfit you wear for your photo shoot. If you are not comfortable and love your clothing, you will probably not love the photographs.
Trying a wide range of outfits can result in your best look. Bring clothing in different colors and cuts. Try a variety of necklines to see which type of neckline looks best in your headshots and portraits.
Corporate clients generally want to dress professionally for headshots. Men may want to choose several different shirts, jackets, and ties. We can take photographs combining your options in different ways. Women may want to choose suits, but they should also try different blouses and jackets, as well as dresses.
We want the focus to be on you. Jewelry should enhance your look instead of being the focus of the image. Therefore, it is best to keep jewelry to a minimum. Small earrings or studs work better than dangling or bulky earrings. Anything chunky, bulky, or flashy draws attention to the jewelry instead of the person.
If you wear eyeglasses, we suggest you bring all pairs of eyeglasses that you wear. We analyze the glare factor for each pair of glasses and take several shots to determine which pair of eyeglasses look best in your headshots or portraits.
For actors, think layers. We can take multiple shots with different combinations of layers. Jackets, tank tops, sweaters, t-shirts, and formal wear are all appropriate. If you are missing something in your wardrobe that you believe you need in your photoshoot, go shopping. If you leave the tags on the items, you can return any items you do not want to keep. We have a steamer in our studio that can quickly rid garments of any wrinkles.
If you are unsure what to wear, don't hesitate to reach out to us. I am here to make your photo session the best that it can be for you. I have extensive experience working with a wide range of clients. As a result, I can suggest outfits that work to give you the outcome you desire. If desired I can get a wardrobe stylist but keep in mind you want to bring clothes you love wearing.
Hair and Makeup
Women's Hair and Makeup
Makeup and hair are important considerations when taking portraits or headshots. While a makeup session is not required for a photography shoot, it is highly recommended for women. You are investing time and money in your photographs. Therefore, it is wise to invest the time and money to prepare for the shoots.
A photography makeup session is different from other makeup sessions. Makeup is applied specifically to work with the lighting used for portraits and headshots. We begin with a natural, clean, simple look. Then, during your photo shoot, we do touch-ups to add subtle changes to your makeup. We can modify your makeup to give you the look you desire.
We want your photographs to capture your hair on its best day. Come to your photo session with your hair styled as you want it to look in your pictures. If you want a particular style, you can discuss styling options in advance with my makeup artist. My makeup artist can give you a blowout or style during your makeup session for an extra charge.
Men's Hair and Makeup
I don’t recommend makeup for men. However, our makeup artist can be available to perform light touch-ups for skin and hair on the day of your shoot upon request. Contact us about pricing before your session. Generally, retouching takes care of any minor issues related to the complexion that you wish to change.
I understand that you might want to capture the unique personality that is facial hair. So, please come to your session with whatever facial hair growth you want to capture in your photos. If you want to trim or shave to capture a different look, bring your grooming products to your session. Our goal is to capture the style you desire, including several different styles during one session.
